11th International Symposium on Avian Influenza, June 24-26, 2025

St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada

About the Symposium

Globally we are a pivotal moment in the changing epidemiology of avian influenza. Many countries have been responding to unprecedented challenges caused by the HPAI panzootic over the past 2 years, with mortality events in wildlife causing significant conservation concerns, massive socioeconomic impacts on the poultry industry, and outbreaks is novel hosts and reservoirs. Concerningly, we are facing the potential of increased mammalian spread following mortality events in marine mammals and continued transmissions in the dairy industry. This highlights the need for a truly One Health response to this global problem. The 11th International Symposium on Avian Influenza aims to bring together scientists, biologists, veterinarians, medical researchers and professionals, and government regulators to exchange and discuss current scientific information on avian influenza and will address national and international issues focusing on domestic animals, wildlife, and human health. The scientific program committee will select timely topics and invited international experts from universities, government research laboratories, regulatory agencies, the veterinary biologics and poultry production industries, and other relevant organizations globally.

Trainee Workshop: The Mission, the Message and the Medium: Science and risk Communication in a complex world

In this session, we will explore ways to communicate about risk effectively. Through collaborative and interactive activites, participants will:

  • gain a deeper understanding of the similarities and differences between risk and non-risk communications
  • identify and prioritze target audiences
  • develop messages to mobilize knowledge
  • select and utilize an appropriate medium

Offered by Drs. Kaylee Byers and Chelsea Himsworth
Kaylee and Chelsea are scientists for whom communication is a vital component of their research, teaching and practice. They have developed and delivered workshops, courses, and written a textbook on science and risk communication. They believe that scientists can and should be great communicators!

Trainee – Mentor Networking Event

Are you a trainee wanting to learn about potential career trajectories, triumphs, and troubles?
Are you a scientist willing to share your professional journey and the wisdoms you have learned along the way?
If you answered ‘yes’ to either of these questions, please join us for this structured networking session!

During registration, you will be asked to submit a photo,  brief biography, and area of focus for research. This information will be collated into a dossier and printed for distribution to all participants at the start of the event.
