Enhancing Public Awareness of One Health Through Strategic Media Engagement

The One Health concept, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, is vital for addressing complex and emerging threats such as zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and environmental degradation. It emphasizes the need for integrated surveillance, prevention, and response strategies to manage health threats at the human-animal-environment interface. Despite the dense populations, high biodiversity, and frequent human-animal-environment interactions in Southeast Asia, the awareness of One Health among the broader public remains limited. Therefore, it is crucial to raise public awareness about the interactions between humans, animals, and the environment in order to promote early reporting, prevent future disease outbreaks, and reduce the risk of potential pandemics. Media plays a critical role in bridging this gap by translating complex scientific concepts into accessible information and fostering public understanding of health risks and preventive measures. Through accurate reporting, compelling storytelling, and science-based communication, media can help to raise awareness of One Health issues, encourage behavioural change, and promote collaboration. Strengthening the capacity of the media to effectively communicate One Health principles is therefore vital to advancing integrated health strategies and enhancing preparedness and response to health threats at both local and regional levels.

Dr. Tu Tu Zaw Win (Tu Tu Zaw Win, ambitious connection builder CFI) is a veterinary epidemiologist at the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) (https://www.cirad.fr/en/), currently based in Bangkok, Thailand. Her work focuses on animal diseases, zoonotic diseases and the One Health approach, with a particular interest in understanding how infectious diseases emerge and spread at the interface between humans, animals, and the environment. She received her PhD in 2019 from the University of Queensland, Australia, and later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the City University of Hong Kong, where she was involved in research on regional health risks and disease surveillance. Since joining CIRAD in 2024, she has been engaged in various regional research projects, capacity-strengthening efforts, and collaborative activities with local and regional partners across Southeast Asia. With a background that includes experience in government, academia, and international research, she aims to contribute to integrated, science-based solutions for improving animal and public health. Her research interests include identifying the factors that drive disease emergence, applying epidemiological methods to assess risk, and supporting the development of evidence-based strategies for disease prevention and control. She is also involved in the scientific community as a peer reviewer for several international journals and serves as a guest editor for Preventive Veterinary Medicine journal. Through her work, she seeks to promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing in support of sustainable and resilient health systems.
