Dear colleagues,
If you are interested in the environmental aspect of One Health, our team at Epi is organising a technical webinar on biodiversity monitoring with environmental DNA (eDNA).
I have been fortunate in that my work has recently taken me into the world of eDNA. It’s been an inspiring journey, including working collaboratively with ecologists and computational biologists to find a way to turn 257,497 eDNA observations into an engaging and high-performing dashboard to showcase the biodiversity in Australia’s amazing marine parks. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for One Health through this new technology.
This webinar will be jointly delivered by myself and our collaborators Prof Shaun Wilkinson and Prof Michael Bunce from Wilderlab (a trail blazing New Zealand and Australia-based eDNA laboratory) and the Minderoo Foundation (an Australian Philanthropy, supporting the advancement of environmental eDNA technologies to bolster conversation efforts).

From Sample to Intelligence: How innovation in eDNA typing and data science is changing biodiversity monitoring
10 September 2025
eDNA data has the potential to improve our ability to make evidence-based decisions across a wide range of environmental health objectives – from community efforts to biosecurity risk management to large scale ecological and conservation measures. The core challenge in making eDNA accessible is the need to embrace complexity yet distil data and insights into a format that is easy to digest, visual and connects eDNA with a wide diversity of stakeholder groups. In this webinar we will discuss how advances in metabarcoding, the availability of new indices such as TICI and data science are building a bridge between eDNA and operational intelligence. We will explore how highly bespoke solutions and open-source software can be tailored to empower the use of eDNA data and support collaboration between stakeholder groups to measure and improve environmental health.
