“Vector Biology: Mosquitoes” workshop: hybrid format, May 20-24, Alberta

This is our fourth annual session of the workshop, which is hosted at the Biogeosciences Institute in Kananaskis. The workshop is open to anyone with a basic life sciences / biology background and does not require previous experience with mosquitoes or vector biology. This workshop provides an opportunity for participants to learn basic tenants of vector ecology, primarily focusing on mosquitoes. Workshop sessions will introduce participants to the basic biology, applied sampling methods, and public and veterinary health importance of mosquitoes. Participants learn material from a range of disciplines that contribute to the study and control of disease vectors.  Pesticide applicator credit is available too (we can confirm details for those curious), and a University of Calgary microcredential (a ‘badge’ – https://badges.ucalgary.ca/badges/230 ) is available.  Students come from academia and government – and we try to get instructors that reflect that, as well.  We’ve added an extra day to cover ‘other vectors’ in a bit more depth, and to allow more student group time.

In person slots are still available – we received substantial support from UofC and anticipate registration, which covers housing and food, will be ~$300. The exact price depends on the total number of attendees due to fee structures. For the first time running the workshop, we are going to offer the workshop in a hybrid format with online attendance possible!  There will still be a registration fee, but it will be less than the main fee (something <$300 CAD – like $200 or less); I am working out details of that. If you’re interested, please sign up at https://forms.gle/7ntAKbzFZACjaLeD8 and under the comments indicate you intend to participate remotely/online. We are trialing this format out this year because colleagues in other provinces really wanted to attend, but could not due to travel restrictions, etc.
